Bausch + Lomb Story Told With Pictures
September 15, 2011 -- The story of world renown optical innovators and one of Rochester’s largest employers is the subject of the newly released book, “A Photographic History of Bausch + Lomb.” With the help of 185 vintage photographs, local historian and author Donovan A. Shilling tells the story of how two German immigrants, John J. Bausch and Henry Lomb, turned a lens grinding business in downtown Rochester into the world leader in optical technology.
The 130 page, paperback book traces the company history from its founding in 1853 to modern times. Photos highlight Lomb’s military service in the U.S. Civil War, the company’s war efforts in World Wars I and II, and today’s contributions to the optical and ophthalmological industries. It also includes the many philanthropic causes supported by B+L and its founding families.
Published by Pancoast Publishing in Victor, “A Photographic History of B + L,” along with Shilling’s other works on local history, is available at select bookstores and online at here. Shilling is also scheduling book signings, including one Saturday, October 8, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Parkwood Heights in Macedon.
In addition to his latest work, Shilling has collaborated with Pancoast Publishing on two collections of short historical stories about Rochester, entitled “Rochester’s Remarkable Past” and “Rochester’s Marvels & Myths.” Shilling is currently working on two more books in this series.
Shilling’s first book with Pancoast Publishing, “A Towpath Tale”, is a historical novel in which Shilling blends the adventures of a runaway teenager, who joins the crew of a canal freighter, with actual historical events of the 1800s. Shilling describes the subject matter of this novel as, “starting out like a Mark Train work and ending like a Charles Dickens work.”
Shilling, who lives in Penfield with his wife Yolanda, is a retired school teacher and administrator. Over the years, he has written several historical books for other publishers before joining forces with Pancoast Publishing.
